Same-sex marriage in California
The state of California granted marriage licenses due to the Supreme Court of California, which ruled on June 18, 2008 that same sex marriage was protected by the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th ammendment of the constitution, which states, "no state shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
However, on November 5, 2008, the state stopped granting same sex marriage licenses with the passing of Proposition 8, an amendment to the California Constitution that limited marriages to those between one man and one woman.
The issue of same sex marriage continues to be a controversial issue.
